Children:
Experts say the first 3 years of a child's life are the most important because at this time their brains are developing connections that lead to them learning about themselves and the world around them.
- According to Family Focus:
- Children at 18 months begin to "pretend" when they play with their toys.
- 2 year olds, mimic others around them. This is when they start distinguishing themselves from others: they develop a sense of "me" and "mine".
- Psychology Today says at 18 months, children learn to recognize themselves in mirrors.
Since children learn to both mimic others and identify themselves by 2 years old, I think every child should have a doll that looks like them by the time they are 2.
By their second year, children have learned to mimic those around them. So, they are treating their baby dolls like others treat babies. Children understand babies hold a position of power. With one scream, a baby can interrupt the whole family: people stop what they are doing and rush to check on the baby. People feed, burp, and dress babies. They hold, love, rock, adore, speak softly to, and treasure babies. Strangers even stop and acknowledge them. The acts of kindness are part of what defines "nurture".
Unfortunately, many children do not have dolls that look like them. A primary reason is the lack of diversity of dolls in stores. Even though I have seen great leaps made in mass-produced fashion dolls, I have not seen a huge change in the number of diverse baby and toddler dolls.

Dolls Heal: Creating the online doll store, Curiositeej™ Dolls & Collectibles, was the first step of my professional doll journey. I created the store about a decade ago when my youngest child was diagnosed with a chronic pain condition. He was unable to attend school because of the pain. I noticed I could tell how he was feeling based on the dolls he played with.
When he was in a lot of pain, he would quietly sit and rock one of his baby dolls.
When he missed school, he would create a mock classroom with his 18-inch dolls. He would sit the dolls in rows and place notebooks in front of the dolls. Then, he would "teach" his dolls.
When he missed his friends, he would turn on the Monster High™ (MH) television show; take his MH and Barbie™ dolls; and, create scenarios that ran parallel with the show.
Doll Store: Three things became clear: 1) my child's pain was not going to be short-lived; 2) the treatments would be expensive; and, 3) we had no idea when/if our child would return to school. So, we had to create a way for our child to successfully earn a living as an adult. I knew our child loved dolls; so, I created Curiositeej™ Dolls & Collectibles. The intent was that my child would become an entrepreneur and successfully run the doll store.
